Observations
By looking at examples at Gallery, here are some take away for design.
- Design “flexibility” to develop capacity to absorb, recover and prepare for future changes
- Give different urban open spaces diversity for use – depending on life stage and backgrounds, people use open spaces differently. E.g. parent/s with small kids, working professional, elderly people
- Ensure easy access to an open space – by public transportation planning and pedestrian networks
- Users’ sense of ownership– responsible use of a place including maintaining hygiene (e.g. not littering) is crucial
- Open Space/Park Management – clear responsibility of management and associated support groups would ensure sustainable maintenance of an open place.
Of course, we are all expected to follow local COVID-related measures and rules to go outside when use these open spaces. Through learning park management of some popular parks in major cities, here are some implications.
- Respect local requirements of social distancing and wearing a face covering e.g. mask
- Reduce/manage capacity of visitors
